Driveway Paving in Montgomery County, MD
Family-owned driveway paving with real materials, real equipment, and real process.
What Goes Into a Driveway Built to Last
A driveway paving job is only as good as what’s underneath it and what’s holding it together. Most paving companies will tell you they use “quality asphalt” and leave it at that. We’d rather just tell you exactly what goes into your driveway, in the same terms we use on the job site, so you know what you’re actually paying for.
The Base
Every driveway starts with the base, and the base is what determines whether your driveway lasts 5 years or 25. Depending on the site, we use 19mm HMA (hot mix asphalt) stone, CR-6 stone, or asphalt millings — recycled asphalt material that’s both structurally solid and better for the environment than hauling in new stone every time. On commercial jobs, or on residential sites with soft ground or areas we’re undercutting to fix a drainage problem, we step up to 22.5mm HMA base material for extra load-bearing strength. The base gets compacted properly before anything else happens — skipping this step, or rushing it, is the single biggest reason driveways fail early.
The Asphalt
For the topping layer, most residential driveways get 9.5mm HMA — a finer, smoother mix built for regular passenger vehicle traffic. Commercial jobs, or residential driveways that need to handle heavier vehicles regularly, get 12.5mm HMA, a coarser, more durable mix designed for greater load-bearing capacity. Before the topping goes down, we apply a tack coat so the new layer bonds to the base as one solid surface instead of sitting on top of it as a separate layer that can shift or separate over time.
The Equipment
We compact residential driveways with 3 to 5 ton rollers, and step up to 5 to 8 ton rollers on commercial jobs where the surface needs to handle heavier, more frequent traffic. Like everything else we use, this equipment is ours — not rented for the day from an equipment yard, which means we show up ready and we’re not waiting on availability to get your job scheduled.
The Process
Every full driveway paving job follows the same real sequence: remove the old surface if there is one, evaluate and prepare the base, compact the base material, apply tack coat, machine-lay the topping asphalt, compact it to the correct density, and bank all edges at a 45-degree angle so the driveway has a clean, finished edge instead of a rough drop-off. We clean the site before we leave. That’s the actual process, not a simplified version of it.

What Quality Driveway Paving Actually Looks Like
A properly paved driveway should have a smooth, consistent surface with no visible low spots where water can pool. The edges should be clean and banked, not crumbling or uneven. Where the new surface meets your garage, walkway, or the street, it should sit flush — not create a lip or a step. If you’re evaluating a quote or a finished job, those are the real signs to look for, not just how black and shiny the surface looks on day one.

Patch, Resurface, or Replace — We’ll Tell You Honestly
Not every driveway needs a full paving job. If a patch or a resurface will genuinely solve your problem, that’s what we’ll recommend. Full driveway paving makes sense when the base has failed, when the surface damage is too widespread for a patch, or when you’re starting from bare ground. We’ll walk you through which situation yours is before we ever start digging.
