Crack Filling & Patching in
Montgomery County, MD

Two different repairs for two different problems — and knowing which one you actually need saves you money.

Crack Filling vs. Patching: The Right Repair for the Problem

“Crack filling” and “patching” get used interchangeably, but they’re not the same repair. A crack is a line in the surface. A pothole or a failed section is where the asphalt itself has broken down. Treating one like the other either wastes money or doesn’t actually fix the problem. We diagnose which one you’re dealing with before we ever start.

Crack Filling

For actual cracks — hairline to moderate width, still structurally a crack rather than a hole — we use hot rubberized sealant, heated and applied directly into the crack so it bonds and flexes with the asphalt instead of sitting on top of it as a rigid patch. This keeps water out, which matters because water getting into a crack and freezing is what turns a small crack into a much bigger repair by spring. Caught early, this is one of the most cost-effective things you can do for a driveway.

Patching

When a section of asphalt has actually failed — a pothole, alligator cracking that’s broken through the surface, or an area where the base underneath has given out — that’s a patch, not a crack fill. We cut out the damaged section and remove it completely, down to a proper depth. This step matters more than people realize: if you don’t dig down far enough, the new patch goes in too thin and fails again fast. We rebuild the area with 3 inches of 19mm base asphalt, then top it with 2 inches of 9.5mm asphalt — sometimes adjusted depending on the specific damage and depth we’re working with, but that’s the standard layer structure for a patch built to actually last, not just cover the hole. Where the new patch meets the old surface, we seal the seam with a tar strip around the edge — that border keeps water from working its way into the gap between old and new asphalt, which is often where a “fixed” patch fails again if it’s not sealed properly.

Infrared Patching

For some repairs, we use infrared patching — heating the existing asphalt at the damaged area until it becomes workable again, then reshaping and compacting it, often blending in fresh material at the same time. Done right, this creates a smoother, more seamless repair than a cut-and-fill patch, without a visible seam where old meets new.

Why the Distinction Matters

A rubberized crack fill won’t hold in a spot where the asphalt has actually failed — there’s nothing solid left for it to bond to. And cutting out a full patch for a simple hairline crack is more work and more cost than the problem calls for. We look at the actual damage and recommend the repair that matches it, not the one that’s easiest to sell.

Why Montgomery County Homeowners Call Us

Same owner, same crew since 1988. Jim or Mike is on every single job — not a salesman, not a project manager you never see again after the estimate. We own our equipment, all of it — not rented by the day.

We don’t push unnecessary work. If a crack just needs to be filled, we won’t sell you a full patch. If the damage is deeper than a crack fill can fix, we’ll tell you that too.
