Asphalt Paving in North Potomac, MD

Family-owned driveway paving, sealcoating, and repair for North Potomac homeowners since 1988.

North Potomac Driveway Paving, Local Since 1988

North Potomac was built starting in the 1980s on larger lots with quality construction in mind. Families moved here for Wootton High and Quince Orchard High Schools, the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail (12 miles for cyclists and hikers), and the quiet feel of established neighborhoods. The homes in Dufief Mill, Potomac Ridge, Stonebridge, Travilah, Potomac Chase, and Quince Orchard Knolls sit on spacious properties with mature landscaping.

But driveways age. Most of those original driveways laid in the 1980s and early 1990s are now 30 to 40 years old. They were built on clay soil that North Potomac’s geography made challenging—clay that holds moisture longer than you’d expect this close to Gaithersburg. After three decades of freeze-thaw cycles, spring rain settling into the clay below, and heavier vehicles than anyone anticipated in 1985, those original driveways have settled unevenly, cracked, or failed outright. And because North Potomac’s established neighborhoods have HOA standards or community appearance rules, a bad driveway matters.

We’ve been paving here since our first year in business, 1988. We’re based five minutes away in Gaithersburg, so we know North Potomac’s soil, its seasonal patterns, and its neighborhoods—not just by name, but by actual conditions on the ground.

Driveway Replacement and Full Tear-Out

Many North Potomac driveways are reaching the end of their original life. We remove the old surface, assess what the base situation is (often thinner than modern standards call for), add gravel and proper base material if the soil underneath is soft or has drainage issues, and lay new asphalt compacted properly so it lasts. Not every driveway that’s cracked needs a full tear-out, but the older ones built on thin gravel almost always do.

Driveway Leveling and Regrading

Original driveways that settled unevenly over 30+ years are a real problem in North Potomac. Water collects in low spots, heaves up in others, and the whole drive becomes a challenge to park on. We identify the low spots, build up the grade where it’s needed, and repave for a properly pitched, level surface that water actually drains off of instead of sitting on.

Driveway Widening

Older driveways in North Potomac’s 1980s-era neighborhoods were sometimes built narrower than modern parking needs. Widening a drive cleanly, tying the new section into the existing asphalt without a visible seam, is work that takes skill and the right equipment.

Sealcoating

North Potomac’s clay soil stays saturated after rain, and that constant moisture is what breaks down unprotected asphalt from underneath. A proper sealcoat creates a barrier that keeps water and UV from reaching the asphalt itself. We apply by hand with squeegees so every edge, apron, and transition joint gets full coverage. Plan on resealing every few years to keep that barrier intact.

Crack Filling and Patching

In North Potomac’s climate, small cracks turn into major damage within one season. We seal hairline cracks with hot rubberized sealant and use infrared patching for areas where the asphalt is already failing underneath. Addressing damage in the fall, before the freeze-thaw cycle kicks in, saves you thousands in replacement costs later.

Culvert Pipe Replacement

Collapsed or rusted pipes under the driveway cause sinkholes and standing water. It’s work most paving companies steer away from because of the permit process, but it’s something we do regularly. See our dedicated Culvert Pipe Replacement page for the full detail.

North Potomac Neighborhoods and Landmarks

If you live in or near Dufief Mill (one of the largest established neighborhoods in North Potomac), you know the historic barns at the corner of Dufief Mill Road and Darnestown—they’re from the old Maple Spring Farm, once one of the leading dairy operations in Maryland. You’ve probably walked the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail, biked with kids on the weekends, or sledded at Aberdeen Local Park.

Neighborhoods like Potomac Chase, Stonebridge, and Travilah have their own community feel, and many have HOA standards that matter when it comes to property maintenance. Quince Orchard Knolls is another established area where people stay long-term. We know the HOA rules in these areas and coordinate driveway work so it meets community standards.

Why North Potomac Driveways Are Different

North Potomac’s clay soil and the area’s topography mean water management is critical. Unlike flatter suburbs further out, North Potomac has enough grade changes that a driveway with poor pitch becomes a standing-water problem fast. Spring storms leave puddles that don’t drain for days. The freeze-thaw cycle between November and March breaks apart improperly pitched driveways year after year.

And because North Potomac neighborhoods were built with community standards in mind—tree-lined streets, consistent home appearance, established HOAs—your driveway isn’t just your problem. It’s visible to neighbors and subject to community guidelines. That means the work has to be done right, on schedule, without disrupting the neighborhood feel.

Driveway Repave and Regrade for Jeff in North Potomac

North Potomac, MD — Completed 2026

What We Found

Jeff’s driveway had been the original surface since the late 1980s. Over the decades, it had settled unevenly—high spots and low spots in a pattern that made parking a calculation. Water pooled in the low areas. The underlying soil was soft clay that had never properly compacted when the original driveway was laid, and the base gravel was thin by today’s standards.

What We Did

We removed the entire original surface, roughly 570 square feet. We added gravel base in the low spots to bring the grade up and ensure proper slope. We widened the left side of the driveway a couple of feet to give Jeff more parking and turnaround space. Then we laid the new asphalt—3 inches of base asphalt, properly compacted, tack coating, and 2 inches of topping asphalt finished smooth with proper pitch so water runs off instead of sitting.

The Result

Jeff now has a level, properly graded driveway that drains the way it should. The widening gave him the extra space he wanted, and it all looks like one continuous surface, not a patchwork repair. One-year workmanship warranty included.

Why North Potomac Homeowners Call Us

Same owner, same crew since 1988. Jim Stanley founded this company, and his son Mike runs it today. Jim or Mike is on every single job — not a salesman, not a project manager you never see again after the estimate. Our crew has been with us for years. These are experienced guys who know what they’re doing, and we don’t rotate them out or sub the work to whoever’s available that week. You get the same faces from estimate to completion. We’re right up the road in Gaithersburg — five minutes from North Potomac.

We own our equipment. Our trucks, our paver, our roller — all ours. Not rented by the day, not borrowed from another crew. We show up ready, every time.

Highest rated on Google with verified reviews from your Montgomery County neighbors. Not bought, not incentivized — real people who hired us and took the time to write about it. Look us up before you decide.

Google Guaranteed, MHIC licensed, fully insured. We passed Google’s background check and screening. MHIC #01-66672 means we’re licensed by the State of Maryland. Both are on the record.

We don’t push unnecessary work. If your driveway needs a patch, we’ll tell you. If it needs a full replacement, we’ll tell you that too. And if a sealer salesman told you to seal a brand-new driveway, we’ll tell you to wait a few years — because we’re not a company that sells you work you don’t need.

We know North Potomac. The clay soil underneath the neighborhoods. The HOA standards in the established communities. The drainage challenges after a heavy rain. The freeze-thaw cycle and how it breaks apart improperly pitched drives. We’ve been paving here since 1988 and we’re not going anywhere.
