Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about paving, pricing, and what to expect.
How long have you been in business?
Since 1988. J Stanley Asphalt is a family business, Jim Stanley founded it, and today his son Mike runs it. Three generations of family experience in asphalt, all in Montgomery County.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We’re licensed in Maryland under MHIC #01-66672 and fully insured. We’re also Google Guaranteed, meaning we’ve passed Google’s background check and screening process.
Do you subcontract out any of the work?
No. We own all of our equipment and run our own crew on every job. When we quote you a job, the people showing up to do it are the same people who work for us every day, not a crew we hired for the week.
Do you serve my area?
We serve homeowners and businesses all across Montgomery County. If you’re not sure whether we cover your specific neighborhood, call anyway, we’ve worked all over the county for close to 40 years.

A finished circular driveway, ready for years of use.
Is the estimate free?
Yes, always. No cost and no obligation to move forward.
How much does a driveway cost?
It depends on the size, condition, and scope of the job, a patch, an overlay, and a full replacement are priced very differently. We’ll give you a straight, honest number after taking a look, not a generic estimate over the phone.
When would you start my job?
We typically book a few weeks out, but that varies. Some jobs on the schedule are waiting on a permit, and some customers just aren’t in a rush, so there’s often more flexibility than people expect. If you’re working around a deadline or need to get in sooner, let us know, we can often work something out.
How long does the job take?
Most driveways can be done in one to two days.
How soon can I drive on it?
Give it about three hours before walking on it, it needs that time to cool first. It’s a petroleum-based product, so we’d suggest leaving your shoes at the door for the first few days after. For vehicles, hold off 48 to 72 hours so the surface has fully set before it takes regular weight.
Why do I see tire marks on my new driveway?
This is completely normal and not a defect. A new driveway isn’t fully cured the day it’s laid, weather, sun, and the asphalt mix all affect how long that takes, usually somewhere in the 30-to-60-day range depending on the time of year, though it can stay soft in spots for up to a year before it’s fully cured. Two things help during that stretch: don’t crank the wheel hard while the car’s sitting still, and mix up where exactly you park instead of hitting the same spot every day. The marks work themselves out on their own as the driveway gets more use.
When can I seal my new driveway?
With an oil-based sealer, right away. With a latex sealer, wait 6 to 12 months. That said, you have a brand-new driveway, we’re not a company that pushes unnecessary work, so we don’t recommend sealing for a few years.
What happens to my old driveway material?
When we remove asphalt, it doesn’t go to a landfill, it gets recycled. Old asphalt is one of the most recycled materials out there, and it typically gets reused as base material for new paving projects.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes, every job includes a workmanship warranty. We’ll explain exactly what’s covered before you sign anything.
Do you handle commercial jobs, not just driveways?
Yes, parking lots, private roads, HOA-maintained streets, churches, and community facilities. We treat commercial scheduling differently than residential, since downtime costs a business money.
What if my driveway just needs a patch, not a full replacement?
Then we’ll tell you that. We’re not a company that talks you into more work than you need, we’d rather earn a repeat customer than oversell one job.
