Driveway Paving Across Clarksburg’s Historic Communities

Clarksburg is a census-designated place at the northern end of the I-270 technology corridor, about four miles north of Germantown and roughly 27 miles from Washington, D.C. Its population has grown to about 29,000 — one of the fastest-growing communities in Montgomery County over the past two decades — but beneath that growth sits a historic crossroads that has been here for more than 250 years.

Clarksburg is named for trader John Clarke and was established at the intersection of the main road between Georgetown and Frederick and an old Seneca trail. One of its earliest settlers was Michael Ashford Dowden, who received a patent for 40 acres in 1752 and built an inn — Dowden’s Ordinary — which hosted the army of General Edward Braddock during the French and Indian War and served as a meeting place for local Sons of Liberty. The community flag, chosen by contest in 2015, was inspired by Dowden’s Ordinary. The historic core of Clarksburg still stands along the original road, with buildings dating to the 1800s, while the master-planned neighborhoods that grew up around it after 2000 transformed the surrounding land into one of the most diverse and fastest-growing communities in the county.

We’ve been paving in Clarksburg since 1988 and are based in Gaithersburg, about 10 minutes south on I-270.

What We Do in Clarksburg

Driveway Paving and Replacement

Clarksburg’s housing spans the full range — older homes on larger lots in the historic corridor, Colonial Revivals from the 1980s, and master-planned townhome communities built in the last 15 to 20 years. Each era has a different driveway at a different stage in its life. When the base has failed, we remove it, rebuild properly, and pave new.

Driveway Widening and Extensions

Adding a parking pad, widening an approach, or extending a short driveway to fit how a property is used all require proper foundation work — base stone, base asphalt, tack coat, topping — done right the first time.

Sealcoating

Clarksburg driveways on wooded lots and in shaded neighborhoods dry more slowly than driveways in open-sun areas. That sustained moisture is what shortens asphalt life. We seal on the right schedule for the surface condition we find.

Crack Filling and Patching

Clay soil, root pressure, and freeze-thaw cycling converge on driveways throughout the area. We fill surface cracks with heated rubberized sealant and cut out and rebuild sections where the base has shifted.

Resurfacing and Overlay

When the base is still sound but the surface has worn through, a resurface is the right call. We mill the transitions, tack coat the existing surface, and machine-lay fresh topping asphalt.

Culvert Pipe Replacement

Older properties in and around Clarksburg sometimes have drainage pipes under their driveways that date to the original development of the land. When those pipes fail the driveway sinks. Montgomery County requires a permit for culvert work. We handle the full job — excavation, pipe, base rebuild, and repaving.

Why Clarksburg Driveways Are Different

Clarksburg is unusual in that it has three distinct housing eras on top of each other — the original historic corridor from the 1800s, the larger-lot subdivisions from the 1980s, and the dense master-planned communities built after 2000. Each era has a different driveway with a different base condition and a different failure pattern.

The 1980s driveways are now 35 to 45 years old — the age where the surface and the base are both showing wear at the same time, and where the right diagnosis before recommending a repair matters most. The newer communities have driveways that are 15 to 20 years old and beginning to show their first surface wear. Neither situation is the same job, and treating them the same way is how you get a repair that doesn’t hold.

Clarksburg Neighborhoods, Parks, and Landmarks

Clarksburg Village is the largest and most established of the master-planned communities — modern homes, parks, and a neighborhood shopping center, with a walkability and family atmosphere that makes it one of the most sought-after addresses in the area. Cabin Branch is a newer development adjacent to the Clarksburg Premium Outlets. Arora Hills is a well-established neighborhood with its own parks and trail access. The Highlands and Ten Mile Creek anchor the western edge of the community near preserved open space.

Clarksburg Premium Outlets is an open-air shopping center with over 90 brand name stores — one of the major retail anchors for all of northern Montgomery County.

Little Bennett Regional Park at 23701 Frederick Road offers trails, camping, a nature center, and 14 historical sites across 3,700 acres of forest and wetlands. Black Hill Regional Park on Little Seneca Lake offers boating, fishing, kayaking, and waterside trails. The Clarksburg Greenway Trail connects pocket parks throughout the newer neighborhoods.

The Clarksburg School at 13530 Redgrave Place, built in 1909, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places — the last remaining of four similar frame schoolhouses built in Montgomery County around the turn of the 20th century, in continuous service from 1909 to 1972. The Clarksburg Historic District along the original road corridor preserves buildings from the 1800s including St. Peter’s Church.

Little Bennett Golf Course provides public golf adjacent to the regional park. The Maryland SoccerPlex at South Germantown Recreational Park is minutes from Clarksburg and is one of the largest soccer facilities in the mid-Atlantic.

Schools serving Clarksburg include Little Bennett Elementary, Wilson Wims Elementary, Snowden Farm Elementary, Rocky Hill Middle School, Hallie Wells Middle School, and Clarksburg High School — the Coyotes, opened in 2006.

We don’t push unnecessary work. A driveway that needs a resurface doesn’t need a full replacement, and we’re not going to tell you it does. We look at what’s actually there before we recommend anything.

We know Clarksburg. The different housing eras and the different driveway conditions that come with them. The older lots and the dense newer communities. We’ve been paving here since 1988 and we’re not going anywhere.
