Asphalt Paving in Darnestown, MD
Family-owned driveway paving, sealcoating, and repair for Darnestown homeowners since 1988.
Built for Darnestown’s Long Driveways and Large Lots
Darnestown sits in the southwestern corner of Montgomery County along Route 28, bounded by the Potomac River to the south, Great Seneca Creek to the west, and Muddy Branch to the east. It’s one of the least developed corners of the county — deliberately so. No Metro, no grid, no commercial strip. The properties here are measured in acres, the driveways are long, and the land between houses is the kind of open space that’s increasingly rare this close to Washington.
The road that runs through Darnestown — Route 28, Darnestown Road — is one of the oldest roads in Montgomery County. Before it was paved, before it was named, it was a Seneca Indian trail connecting the Potomac River corridor to the interior of the county. William Darne, who settled at the intersection of what are now Darnestown Road and Seneca Road in the early 1800s, served as a state representative and judge and served on the board of the C&O Canal Company. The community took his name around 1812. By the 1820s there was a grist mill, a blacksmith, a wheelwright, and a small post office at the crossroads. In August 1861, 18,000 Union troops — roughly equal to the entire population of Montgomery County at the time — encamped on the farmland around Darnestown, establishing a main line of defense under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks to protect Washington from a Confederate crossing of the Potomac.
Today Darnestown’s neighborhoods — Highlands of Darnestown, Darnewood Estates, Stone Manor, Quince Orchard Park — are among the most sought-after addresses in Montgomery County. The lots are large, the homes are substantial, and the driveways that come with them require a different level of work than what most paving companies are set up to handle.
We’ve been paving in Darnestown since 1988 and are based in Gaithersburg — about 15 minutes east on Route 28.

What We Do in Darnestown

Driveway Paving and Replacement
Darnestown’s properties sit on lots that run from one to several acres, and the driveways on those lots were built to match. Long approaches, wide pads, driveways that have to handle the weight of everything from daily commuter cars to delivery trucks to landscaping equipment. When the base fails on a driveway this size, we remove everything, rebuild with proper stone and compacted base asphalt, and pave new. We’ve been doing this kind of work in Darnestown’s large-lot neighborhoods for over 35 years.

Driveway Widening and Extensions
On a Darnestown property, widening is usually about adding a turnaround area, extending a parking pad, or reconfiguring an approach built for a different use. We build the base under the new section to match the existing drive and saw-cut a clean tie-in seam so the two sections work as one.

Sealcoating
Darnestown driveways sit under heavy tree canopy on wooded lots, and that shade keeps moisture on the surface longer than in open-sun communities. We assess the surface condition and apply the right sealer — and if you’re planning to sealcoat a driveway we just resurfaced, we’ll schedule it for the right time rather than rushing it.

Crack Filling and Patching
Darnestown’s large lots mean long driveways, and long driveways mean more linear footage of edges where cracking starts. Root systems from mature hardwoods push up from below. Freeze-thaw cycles work the clay soil from underneath every winter. We fill with heated rubberized sealant where the damage is surface-level, and cut out and rebuild where the base has shifted.

Resurfacing and Overlay
When the base is sound but the surface has cracked and worn, a resurface is the right call. We mill the transitions, address any root or grade issues before anything goes down, tack coat the existing surface, and machine-lay fresh topping asphalt. On a Darnestown driveway that might be 2,000 to 3,000 square feet or more, getting the base evaluation right before recommending a resurface is the difference between a repair that holds and one that doesn’t.

Culvert Pipe Replacement
Darnestown’s properties sit on land that was farmed for over a century before the neighborhoods went in, and the drainage pipes under some driveways reflect that history. When an older pipe fails and the driveway starts sinking, no surface repair holds. We handle the full job — excavation, pipe, base rebuild, and repaving.
Driveway Resurfacing for Misael in the Highlands of Darnestown
Darnestown, MD — Completed Fall 2025
What We Found
Misael’s driveway in the Highlands of Darnestown was about 2,700 square feet — a large, mature-neighborhood driveway showing its age at the garage and along the surface. About 340 to 420 square feet of asphalt had failed and needed to come out. At the garage, the grade was sitting too high. And near the garage, a tree root system had damaged the base underneath the asphalt. Both the grade problem and the root damage needed to be addressed before any new surface went down.
What We Did
We removed the 340 to 420 square feet of failed asphalt and hauled it away. We lowered the grade at the garage so the new surface would meet the transition flush. We removed the tree root material near the garage that had been damaging the base. We tack coated the entire 2,700 square feet so the new asphalt would bond to the existing surface. We machine-laid 2.5 inches of topping asphalt across the full driveway, then power rolled with a 3- to 5-ton roller. All edges were string-lined and hand-compacted for a clean, precise finish. The job site was cleaned before we left. Mike was on site from start to finish.
The Ongoing Relationship
We’re scheduled to return in fall 2026 to sealcoat Misael’s driveway — letting the new surface cure a full year before sealing is the right approach, and that’s what we recommended from the start.
“Mike was very communicative throughout the estimate process and the entire paving of my driveway in Darnestown. His team worked hard and efficiently to complete the project in a timely manner. The end result is a beautiful driveway with clean, string-lined edges that were carefully hand-compacted. Mike was on site from start to finish, which made it easy to trust the whole process. I’m recommending them to all of my neighbors.”

Why Darnestown Driveways Are Different
Darnestown is not a suburban community with large lots — it’s an area where the land itself sets the terms. Lot sizes that run one to three acres or more mean driveways that carry a different kind of use than anything in Rockville or Germantown. Landscaping trucks. Delivery vehicles. Tractors on horse properties. A surface that has to hold up to all of that over decades of freeze-thaw cycles on clay soil is a different engineering proposition than a 600-square-foot suburban driveway.
The tree canopy throughout Darnestown’s neighborhoods is also significant. The mature oaks and hardwoods on these large lots don’t just shade the driveway — they run root systems underneath it. Root damage to the base is one of the most common problems we find on Darnestown driveways, and it’s one that a surface repair can’t fix. You either address the root and the grade before you pave, or you’re back in the same spot in a few years.
Darnestown Neighborhoods and Landmarks
Darnestown Square Heritage Park, at the intersection of Route 28 and Seneca Road, marks the historic center of the community with two historical markers — one covering the origins of the town from the Seneca Indian trail through William Darne’s settlement, and one documenting the 1861 Civil War encampment that turned the local farmland into a Union Army division headquarters. The intersection itself is one of the oldest in Montgomery County, and the history layered into it goes back centuries.
Black Rock Mill, built in 1815 on Black Rock Road, is one of the oldest surviving structures in Darnestown — a stone grist mill on Great Seneca Creek that operated through much of the 19th century and still stands. Darnestown Presbyterian Church, completed in 1858, is the community’s historic anchor church on Route 28.
The C&O Canal runs along the Potomac River at Darnestown’s southern edge. Lock 24 and Riley’s Lockhouse are accessible from the towpath. Blockhouse Point Conservation Park offers trails along the Potomac with views of the river and the Virginia shoreline across it. The Seneca Historic District, downstream along the canal, contains the ruins of the Seneca Red Sandstone quarry whose stone was used to build the Smithsonian Castle in Washington.
Bretton Woods Recreation Center — pool, tennis, fitness center, and an 18-hole golf course — sits at the southern end of Darnestown near the Potomac. Neighborhoods in the Darnestown CDP include Highlands of Darnestown, Darnewood Estates, Stone Manor, Quince Orchard Park, Kingsview, Willows of Potomac, and Darnestown Forest. Quince Orchard High School, Lakelands Park Middle School, and Darnestown Elementary School serve the area.

Why Darnestown Homeowners Call Us
Same owner, same crew since 1988. Jim Stanley founded this company, and his son Mike runs it today. Jim or Mike is on every single job — not a salesman, not a project manager you never see again after the estimate. Our crew has been with us for years. These are experienced guys who know what they’re doing, and we don’t rotate them out or sub the work to whoever’s available that week. You get the same faces from estimate to completion. Misael had Mike on site from start to finish — that’s not unusual for us, it’s how we do every job.
We own our equipment. Our trucks, our paver, our roller — all ours. Not rented by the day, not borrowed from another crew. We show up ready, every time.
Highest rated on Google with verified reviews from your Montgomery County neighbors. Not bought, not incentivized — real people who hired us and took the time to write about it. Look us up before you decide.
Google Guaranteed, MHIC licensed, fully insured. We passed Google’s background check and screening. MHIC #01-66672 means we’re licensed by the State of Maryland. Both are on the record.
We don’t push unnecessary work. If your driveway needs a resurface and the base is still solid, we’ll tell you that. If it needs a full replacement, we’ll show you why before we start. And if you need a sealcoat next fall, we’ll schedule it for the right time — not whatever’s most convenient for us.
We know Darnestown. The large-lot driveways that carry real weight. The root systems from the mature hardwoods on these properties. The clay soil and the freeze-thaw pressure that comes with every winter along the Potomac corridor. We’ve been paving here since 1988 and we’re not going anywhere.
